Florida International University (FIU) is making waves on the national stage once again. The Miami-based institution has been ranked among the top 10 universities in the nation and earned the distinction of being the highest-ranked university in Florida, according to Washington Monthly’s 2025 college rankings.
While South Florida is often associated with nightlife and leisure, its academic reputation continues to rise. Miami is proving it’s more than just a vacation hotspot, emerging as a hub for nationally recognized education. With multiple local high schools recently ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report, FIU’s new ranking further cements the region’s academic credibility.
Unlike U.S. News & World Report, which is often criticized for emphasizing wealth and prestige, Washington Monthly evaluates universities based on their contribution to the public good. Schools are scored in four key areas:
Access
Affordability
Student outcomes
Commitment to public service
FIU placed No. 8 overall in the nation. The only institutions ranked higher were:
Berea College (KY)
California State University, Fresno
California State University, Northridge
California State University, Los Angeles
Princeton University (NJ)
Sacramento State University (CA)
University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
By finishing ahead of every other Florida university, FIU’s recognition underscores its growing role as a leader in accessibility, value, and service to its community.
