Miami International Airport is embarking on its most significant infrastructure expansion in nearly two decades with the approval of Concourse K, a $600 million project scheduled to open in spring 2029.
Miami-Dade commissioners have officially greenlit the construction, marking the end of a 22-year gap since the airport's last terminal expansion. A ceremonial groundbreaking is planned for this summer, with construction beginning immediately thereafter.
The Lemartec-NV2A Joint Venture secured the design-build contract through a competitive bidding process, with Perez & Perez Architects leading the architectural design team.
Concourse K will enhance the South Terminal with substantial new capacity and improved connectivity:
Passenger Facilities: Six additional gates will accommodate growing passenger volumes and provide airlines with expanded operational flexibility.
Baggage Infrastructure: Two new baggage carousels will streamline passenger experience, while a critical baggage system connection between the South and Central Terminals will improve overall airport efficiency.
This expansion addresses Miami International Airport's role as a major gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, where passenger traffic has consistently grown over the past decade. The addition comes as MIA continues to handle record passenger volumes, making additional capacity essential for maintaining service standards.
The project represents not just an expansion of physical space, but a modernization of airport infrastructure that will serve South Florida's aviation needs well into the next decade.
With construction set to span nearly five years, the 2029 completion will position Miami International Airport to better compete with other major international hubs while supporting the region's economic growth through enhanced connectivity.
