Big news for public transportation and clean energy advocates: Miami-Dade is making history this September with the launch of the South Dade TransitWay, a $368 million investment that will transform the daily commute for thousands.
The South Dade TransitWay is not just another bus route — it’s poised to become the longest battery-electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the country. This new 20-mile corridor connects Homestead to Dadeland South, bringing faster, cleaner, and more reliable transit to South Florida.
Unlike traditional bus lines, this BRT system runs exclusively on battery-electric buses and will operate on dedicated lanes, completely separated from regular traffic. That means no unexpected traffic jams — just smooth, consistent travel at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour.
To ensure the lanes stay clear, gate arms will control access, allowing only the BRT buses through.
A full ride from Homestead to Dadeland South will take just 39 minutes — a huge improvement in speed and efficiency for many daily commuters.
Commuters can expect 14 modern stations spaced out along the route, stretching from Dadeland to Florida City. Each station is designed with accessibility, safety, and rider comfort in mind.
This project is more than a transit upgrade. It’s a commitment to:
Sustainable mobility
Reducing carbon emissions
Expanding access to rapid public transportation for underserved communities
Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins announced the official September launch date, marking a major milestone in Miami-Dade’s push toward future-focused infrastructure.
